Fun gardening =/= self sufficiency either. Self sufficiency crops are the boring ones that can keep for a long time like potatoes and squash. I agree with your full time job analysis, unless you can get your family to help too, or you are able to automate all watering.

Yep. I've got dozens of potatoes growing maintenance free in in a few square yards. Next year I aim to do half the yard, even if I don't harvest them. They are big yield for little work. When starving without choice I'd rather eat potatoes than a Rosemary bush. I live half a block from the freshwater of the Detroit River (pros/cons). My neighbour feeds squirrels peanuts, but there are only so many of them around to trap if it comes to that.
