I don't think anybody will deny that Society is hanging on by a thread. It's just coming up with solutions to it that causes the problem, because it seems to me the only way to undo the so-called 'progress' of technology would be to trigger a scenario like you described and recreate hunter-gatherer society. The problem is that there is no way we could ever get the masses to give up technology willingly. As ideal as it is, the people aren't going to give up their toys.

Safe to say, some disaster, accidental or intended is inevitable. Thankfully, we have over 2000 years of history, and natural instinct showing us how to live without technology.

More than I'd like them to be, that's for sure. If you want a 100% predictable deadline for humanity, it's in about ~150 mln years when the Sun heats us up to uninhabitable conditions. Sure, sounds like a lot of time, but compared to what we could extend that for, settling for that would be selling ourselves short. After all, how do we know we're not the only shot at sentient life in the Universe? The Universe still has questions for us to answer and dying prematurely may leave those stones forever unturned

    You can keep independent/decentralized technology while shedding complex social structures. No reason for solar panels, 3d printers, etc to stop working and being used. Tho it could become difficult to fix aging tech if that happened.
