Yes, Joseph Tainter wrote about civilisations collapsing when they become too complex. The level of technology we have now allows us to maintain complex society because we have instant communication, fast travel etc. Knock those out and you immediately have nothing holding this together, you have immediate collapse.

I don't think Russia is planning on this though, they have been moving away from paper to internet in terms of all of their administrative work. They're moving more and more 'on the grid' so to speak, I can't imagine they're going to go sicko mode to try to fuck the whole world in honour of Linkola or something lol.

I believe even Marx discussed this idea.

In response to a war they could in retaliation

I don't think anybody will deny that Society is hanging on by a thread. It's just coming up with solutions to it that causes the problem, because it seems to me the only way to undo the so-called 'progress' of technology would be to trigger a scenario like you described and recreate hunter-gatherer society. The problem is that there is no way we could ever get the masses to give up technology willingly. As ideal as it is, the people aren't going to give up their toys.

Safe to say, some disaster, accidental or intended is inevitable. Thankfully, we have over 2000 years of history, and natural instinct showing us how to live without technology.

There's no evolutionary trait that can save humanity from an asteroid but technology

What are the chances of an asteroid hitting us anyway?

More than I'd like them to be, that's for sure. If you want a 100% predictable deadline for humanity, it's in about ~150 mln years when the Sun heats us up to uninhabitable conditions. Sure, sounds like a lot of time, but compared to what we could extend that for, settling for that would be selling ourselves short. After all, how do we know we're not the only shot at sentient life in the Universe? The Universe still has questions for us to answer and dying prematurely may leave those stones forever unturned

You can keep independent/decentralized technology while shedding complex social structures. No reason for solar panels, 3d printers, etc to stop working and being used. Tho it could become difficult to fix aging tech if that happened.

Or maybe it should’ve been developed to be left behind and let its perils be known

If ecological collapse doesn't happen, which I highly doubt, then technology will certainly get us. Within a few decades we're going to be living in a world where a single individual is going to be capable of creating insane WMDs from a basement. This is mainly because of the nanotech - and biotech - revolution that's around the corner. Anyone who thinks governments are going to be able to control this is simply delusional. And that's if AI doesn't wipe us out before all of this. The Californian Ideology can only lead to our utter destruction. The techno-utopians of Singularity University will end up creating a Kaczynskian dystopia.
