Even wikipedia states that "Industrial espionage" is a part of US-foreign policy. That supposedly is the reason for China copying this.

Back in the 1980's I was working at this high tech start up in Oak Ridge, TN when one day they opened up the factory to the Japanese. They took shitloads of pictures. Now these items are made in China and not Oak Ridge.
