My own theory is that a civil war happened among the members of the church. After the death of the black pope, Himmler became too powerful. Perhaps Himmler was already rogue before that, or was even involved in his death.

We are talking about the war in Germany right?

Himmler certainly wasn't Christian and I know from reading that many Nazis were against Hitler. There were all types of National Socialists.
