Demonstrating that the west does not have the monopoly on ignorance and poor education. Any soldier who does not recognize the danger of a cell phone signal at this point is a massive danger to himself and his companions.

That said, this is far deeper than just the individual soldiers. Humans have become accustomed over the past twenty-five years to the idea that we are always in touch with our loved ones. We cannot imagine that by virtue of being 200 miles from someone, we are not able to talk to them whenever we want. That level of communication is now assumed.

So imagine the Russians (or Ukrainians, to whom this is also happening, or anywhere else in the world) say: "NO contact except through official communications devices." People would suddenly not be able to reach their loved ones to feel connected in the hellhole where they are fighting. That sense of isolation is completely foreign to the modern mind.

Until society breaks down completely and the communication we now take for granted - despite it being only 25 years old - breaks down and we are once again introduced to the concept of self-reliance. This is likely where we will go in the not-so-distant future.

So much suffering coming for those who have not even considered this possibility...

Possibly this is happening now because Russia has started pulling recruits out of civilian life while previously most troops had a few years training behind them.
