For the Democrat rank and file, Party has replaced principles and convictions; and Democrat politicians were never really anything but self serving. However, circumstances made self service and liberalism appear to coincide in certain spheres.

One such circumstance was the Wall Street Crash, almost on the heels, relatively speaking, of the basement shooting of Tsar Nicholas and his family.

Another was the Great Migration, which forced Democrats, theretofore the Party of slavery, then of Jim Crow, to become the party of integration.

Another was the "industrial north," where Republicans had been in bed with the monied classes since the end of the Civil War, forcing Democrats to become the pro-union party, if they didn't want to be only a regional party.

And so on

But, those demographics are currently in flux. What happens when the game of musical chairs pauses significantly again, I don't know.
