People are waking up to the fact that a degree doesn't necessarily confer upon you the skills you need to succeed. We have options now, and the halls of academia are far too slow to adapt.

Part of it is demographics - the generation leading up to 2008 had a falling birth rate and the 2008 generation can't afford kids. Another part of it is lack of public funding .

Perhaps the biggest challenge though is the declining economic prospects for many graduates. After 2008, many of those who graduated ended up underemployed and heavily indebted.

And not able to pay back loans.

College has become too expensive.

Yep. In order to pay the debt back, unless the student has rich parents, they need a high paying job.
