Moon of Alabama has an excellent update on Ukraine's counter-offensive. Here's a summary in the form of a Russian joke posted yesterday by barfly Quo Vadis:

A hunter from the city comes to a village and says "I'm going to hunt bears."

    Lol. Ukraine is the one committing genocide. They were killing the Russian speaking minority in The Donbass for years.

    As far as the offensive, it's failing badly for the Ukrainians. The Ukrainians have not taken much and have suffered very heavy losses. The Russians had 3 lines of defenses and the first one was only supposed to offer token resistance. The Ukrainians so far are struggling to even penetrate the first. What is even more important than capturing ground however, is the death toll, and the Ukrainians are sustaining heavy losses, while inflicting only minimal losses on the Russians.

      Putin never wanted the Donbass. The genocidal government that arose after the Western backed Maidan coup is to blame. All they had to do was to treat the Russian speaking minority with decency. Instead they unleashed a brutal shelling campaign and violated the Minsk accords.

        Russia's strategy is to destroy the Ukrainian armed forces so that they are no longer a threat to Russia or to Russians living in Ukraine. Mounting an attack is expensive and risky. If the enemy insists on coming to you to be destroyed, why change tactics?

        It's like when you have an invasion of sweet-eating ants. You can burn down your house to find and destroy their nest. Or you can put out Terro and let the ants do all the work. They take the Terro back to their nest and wipe themselves out.

        About that territory:

        Friends, if someone expected that the Ukrainian offensive would be repulsed without temporary loss of some villages or some advanced positions, then you are far from military topics. The initiative was and still remains with the enemy, who calculated the forces and means for a successful breakthrough of our front. As expected in an offensive, the enemy threw more infantry and equipment into battle than we had on the defensive. Despite this, the goals of the enemy’s offensive plan to break through our front and enter the operational space failed in the first 3 days with huge losses for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

        In the first two days in the Zaporozhye direction, we lost two positions, which we returned on the third day. In the South-Donetsk direction, the enemy is loudly declaring progress in some areas, most of which was the territory of the gray zone. Regular military work is going on.
