These weren't Wehrmacht. These were SS. These are guys that got promoted to carry out the final solution. You had to be next level already to get promoted, and the acts you'd regularly do were evil.

Always wondered just how "instant" death by hanging is. They look dead pretty much instantly. I think hanging is meant to break the neck, causing instant death, but I mean... whats the science here? How does that instantly kill someone?

Not that I know much more, but a couple points:

Yea, if you put the noose behind the ear it will snap your neck. You're definitely braindead instantly, I think it takes a while for your body to actually die. I'm surprised there wasn't much of any drop, their bodyweight alone was enough. I remember hearing that (in some different context, I think 1800's USA) it wasn't enough for some lighter women, and family members would need to pull on their feet so the hanged wouldn't suffer needlessly.
