original video iirc shows the leadup: the guy is being the drama queen standing out in the middle of the road and the girl comes out to plead with him. he grabs her and pushes her to the ground, then she's the one that gets hit.

I think the car was moving too fast. It's night, visibility is definitely lowered even if there are lights, anything that doesn't stand up will be hard to see.
Anyway I can't help but notice that the guy got flipped around and ended up looking like a Walmart rotisserie chicken.
