Somewhat disturbing. There exists a hypothesis about the epidemic of BSE (Mad Cow disease) that occurred in the 90's in certain regions of Europe (broadly limited to the U.K., though) having been triggered by the use organophosphate pesticides that were commonly poured on cattle as a part of head-lice treatment in said regions back then. This has never been officially acknowledged as a causative factor of BSE (and potentially the trigger for the variant form of CJD induced in humans by the route of consumption of the infected bovine products). Moreover, there were predictions about the additional, returning waves of vCJD epidemic occurring decades after the periods of inactivity since long incubation period is the hallmark of prion diseases.

If the hypothesis is true, it is of the best interest to silence the voices blaming a "man-made" factor. The similar underlying mechanism of denial could have accompanied the outbreak of so-called "Toxic Oil syndrome" during the 80's in Spain.
