Now I am wondering if burning plastic creates dioxins. I have a fire pit in my backyard where I burn trash, including cardboard boxes and sticks, but should I not let any plastic get into the fire? And let the plastic go to the landfill instead?

Wonder no more. Do not burn plastics because burning them creates dioxins. Those high tech plasma torch burning facilities are hot enough to totally break down the plastics but your home fire isn't nearly hot enough to do that. So you're generating intermediate products such as dioxins.
