Once a town of Polish immigrants, Hamtramck is now majority Muslim (from Yemen and other Middle Eastern countries). In 2021, it became the first U.S. city to have an all-Muslim city government. There is only one American-born city council member. Amanda Jaczkowski is of Polish descent but converted to Islam in 2012.
