I read fanfiction (it passes the time, and it costs nothing) and I've run across more than a few authors who openly proclaim their utter loathing for Rowling and view their continued use of her material as somehow "taking it back" for the oppressed people she's supposedly advocating the genocide of. They really do make the central aspect of their lives this woman and her refusal to validate the mentally ill, the fetishists, and the predators.

(One guy actually went so far as to rewrite something like 1/3 of a 10k-word chapter just to put in a massive "take that" against Rowling with a totally irrelevant digression into how one of the key characters is actually trans and thanks to a magical potion is able to be their "correct" gender, and how trans people are actually really common in magical society thanks to this potion.)

Honestly that's fucking hilarious.

I need to add in my performative hate for this author in case any of the people reading it disagree with her views enough to get upset over me writing fanfic in her world. Like if anyone hates her that much they wouldn't be reading it? The really funny thing is I don't think she'd care beyond breaking them by saying "thank you for supporting me and my views by continuing to write things and generate interest in my franchise"

That rewrite is funny as fuck though. Because in that case aren't they going the whole trans medicalist route and only saying that they're valid if they take the potion? What happened to you don't need dysphoria to be trans? Seems like that author is a transphobe on the level of Rowling to me.

The potion part is even funnier if you know how polyjuice potion works in canon:

  1. It only lasts a few hours per dose, which is the least of your worries but still a hassle. Certainly not a permanent cure for gender dysphoria.

  2. It explicitly does not change your voice. The trans character Sirona Ryan in Hogwarts Legacy was condemned by TRAs for having "a man's voice", despite being voiced by a real trans woman.

  3. It changes your appearance to that of a specific real person, whose hair is added to the potion just before consumption. It doesn't let you fine-tune your appearance, or become your "true self" of the opposite sex, only take the form of someone you are not.

Nothing is ever good enough for them. How dare the trans woman sound like a trans woman. Surely that's actual representation?

I mean with fanfic I guess they could be added in their own super special change your gender potion that works and doesn't reverse. In which case why are you thinking that that would get at Rowling? She seems the sort to think that if trans people could transition like that would actually be for it because then they'd be female and not have some of the issues associated with it that she does in the real world. Honestly it just seems like some of them have trouble with fantasy vs reality.
