Narcissism is so funny. It's like, okay, you and all your friends all individually think you're the center of the universe, so you all begrudgingly acknowledge each other's constant self-aggrandizing so you can have your turn at it. Anyone outside of the circle risks injuring your ego by reminding you other people exist and have feelings, so you stay in it. What a community.

one good description is seeing everyone else as an NPC in a game or an extra in a play

Last Psychiatrist likened it to treating all your friends like the "girl friend" in a romcom, the "bestie" who gets no plot or interiority of her own. She's just a mechanism for advancing the protagonist through the story.
