Yeah good point. I thought the media used to make a point of not drawing attention to suicide in order not to encourage copycats (back when we recognized that social contagion was a thing)? Now they're actively promoting it.

That particular media concern went out the window when mass shootings and other sorts of large-scale (but not military or "official" terrorism) casualty events--to say nothing of the social and political shitstorms that inevitably sprung up in their wake--started becoming viewer hooks that could be used to peddle advertising and curated opinions.

Hey if writing a story about mass shootings pays the bills people will do that.

I mostly like to blame the readers for enabling it. I almost never bring up such unpleasant news with my friends unless it's somehow directly relevant to our lives, 99% of the time it is not, and they've learned not to bring it up with me because their inevitable question of "why does this happen" is met with me telling them it's their fault for talking about it so much. Not directly of course, but aggregated across the whole population, you go out and shoot up a school, boom you're infamous now, and because you can't help yourself to push like and forward to all your friends, congrats you've just spread that shit and normalized something that really is quite rare statistically. Now every copycat and twisted individual that wants their 24 hours of infamy is gonna go with mass shooting as their go to instead of idk, just offing themselves.

Like imagine you're some unhinged individual having a shit day and you hate everyone and want to see the world burn, maybe you just sit at home and be miserable. Maybe you scream at people and be angry, or maybe you scroll through Facebook see a rampage killing and think, "oh I should do that that will show em"

Why share that shit in general? Like sure if you're in a group that discusses such crime and relevant precautions that's one thing, but like, why would you put that on your Facebook.

Yeah- once there's at least one mass shooting where the shooter flat-out said "I'm doing this shooting to become famous", there needs to be damnatio memorae on mass shootings. It's an act of terror, so declare mass shooters enemies of the state (which means naming the shooter is considered an act of treason)- it'll stop the shooting news and even give the shooter's family a bit of solace [since they'll never truly know if their kid was another victim or the perpetrator.)
