they're basically lapdogs: confident when Mistress is there to provide for every one of their needs, then reduced to all the communication skills of an alarm clock if the house is empty, barking and snarling for hours at any random passerby because they can't cope; and if they're thrown out into the world on their own their life expectancy is measured in hours
