Being gay is a genetic mutation. Since mutations rarely benefit humanity and are more likely to produce freaks, the freaks usually get winnowed out. However, some dysgenic genes remain so we get gays, pedophiles, on and on.

I don't think it's correct to say mutations rarely help humanity. There'd be no evolution if not for mutations. They can be good or bad.
