Because they want to compete against women. They don't want fairness, they want victory.

But they'll frame their lack of entry as a desire to not be "othered" by not being allowed to compete with (and as) women. There's no way that they won't have that copout prepared for when someone asks them about it.

You're most likely right. Really hoping the women involved don't take it this time and let them know they're not welcome. Sadly it'll likely cost them prospects if they refuse to compete which feels like the only way you'd end this completely. They can have the 'womens league' but the women will make a female league but I'd hate to concede that ground as it is.
