That makes it even more confusing because the teacher said the project was fine so how do you even discuss the project without differentiating somehow?

My guess is that the teacher is just stupid and clumsily trying to make this project go away. Or maybe thought she could torture the student with passive-aggressive language games, but quickly got in over her head.
