Fun fact: There was a previous attempt to make an “all-female driver category” with the W-Series.

It folded before it could complete its 3rd season.

Expect the same thing to happen with F1 Academy

Yeah, it’s not like they haven’t been desperate to have a female driver in F1 for the past twenty years or so. Trouble is, F1 is so elite that unless they can compete with men in top physical shape (you need to be supremely fit to handle high-g corners repeatedly for two hours) they will never even get selected.

I believe there’s a couple of female test drivers working for various constructors at the moment, if they really wanted to virtue signal a constructor could let them race but I don’t think the constructors want to lose points that much.

Maybe someone will offer Lewis Hamilton enough cash to Troon out, he probably has a number in mind already.

Reminds me a little if Vae Victis the all female esports team that got wrecked repeatedly because they were promoted into the elite level based on their gender and not ability, there was an interview with their “trainer” and he said he couldn’t advise them as they kept complaining he was patronising them. Hilarious.

Why can't there be an all-female category, if women want to race? What's the problem? Are you also against women's sports league in general? Because if so, you'd be right on par with TRAs.

The problem I have is not the category itself. It’s the fact that it has very little promotion from F1 to the point where none of its races are going to be aired Live. It’s clear that F1 doesn’t actually care about it and is only doing it in order to look virtuous.

Also, racing is a gender-mixed sport and has been that way for OVER A CENTURY. There have been plenty of females that have completed with men and there are even examples of women having some success competing with men.

Sabine Schmitz was a favourite and the episodes of Top Gear UK she featured on were brilliant, her Nurburgring run is astonishing. Vicky Butler-Henderson likewise on Fifth Gear.

No one would have a problem with any driver who earned their place in a team. And they would probably be drowned in sponsorship offers if they did.

If they demand a ready made elite-level league a la English Premier League or NBA, then they will require substantial subsidies from the men’s leagues and generous broadcasters who wish to signal their virtue (literally what’s happening right now with British broadcasters and the Women’s Super League football). The league will struggle to attract fans who follow the game week to week and they will rely on viewing figures from main events (World Cup, European Cup etc) to bolster TV numbers. Actual in person support, even with vast numbers of match tickets given to schools, is barely enough to fill a single stand and so actual match operations lose money if held in the main venues.

Now, what they could do is invest in grassroots women’s sport, organically grow a fan base and build interest and value. If I were doing it I would select a sport that has either no male equivalent or has a male equivalent but is paid no attention, netball, field hockey, lacrosse or maybe even a sport where men and women compete together like Korfball, which has specific rules to ensure that gender differences are taken into consideration and teams must field both men and women.

The trouble is similar to the every other issue with gender equality, no one wants to wait for changes/efforts to pay off, they want to implement a needed change and see the difference immediately and that’s ridiculous.

At the end of the day, women’s sport as entertainment is always going to run into the issue that men are by far the largest consumer of sport and they are not going to watch their favourite sports played at a lower level by women. They might watch a new sport that isn’t played by men, if it was marketed properly, but if the sport targets women and girls as spectators and fans and ignores anything that might appeal to men, it will need subsidies or it will fold.

I teach, I even taught for years at an all girls school, and I never once got asked by any of the hundreds of girls I’ve taught what football team I support, I don’t even recall a single conversation with the girls about football. With boys that is the first question they ask me, followed by whether or not I play call of duty.

Yes that's just what I want for my daughter, to have a career driving around in circles at stupid speeds risking injury or death at every turn. I'm glad we have emotional and overdramatic advertisements like this to dissuade her from actually doing something important with her life.
