"The hypothesis that transgender and gender diverse youth assigned female at birth identify as transgender due to social contagion does not hold up to scrutiny and should not be used to argue against the provision of gender-affirming medical care for adolescents," Dr. Alex S. Keuroghlian, the study's senior author and director of Fenway's National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center, and the Massachusetts General Hospital Psychiatry Gender Identity Program, said in a statement.
Somebody obviously hasn't seen the various troon subs on Reddit, especially the ones that prey on confused kids and try to "crack the eggs." Or, before that, Tumblr, where being anything but normal was instantly celebrated and validated by a veritable legion of special identity cheerleaders.
At this point I don't know what's worse, Tumblr or Reddit.
Reddit, I'd say. There's still fuckery to be found on Tumblr--mostly in the hardcore fandoms--but the porn ban and the subsequent mass migration to Twitter took a lot of the crazy out of circulation over there.
After using both Reddit and Tumblr extensively, I have found them both to be equally fucked up :/ Tumblr is still plenty crazy, except instead of porn it's hyperwoke gendies. You can't escape it on Tumblr.
Fucked up in different ways, I'd say.
Funny enough the Muslims saw Reddit worse than Tumblr, since they made this picture.
Maybe the person who made this doesn't know what Tumblr is lol
Tumblr seems more generational my specific, and I think you need an account to get access. Reddit is really a free for all
The academic equivalent of saying “nuh-uh, they are!”
You know what I actually believe that transmen in particular are less likely to be the result of a social contagion and more likely related to the sex-based trauma that a LOT of females experience growing up. Some are so distraught by it that the only way they can find comfort is by not being female.
Probably both. A social contagion among young females predisposed to it.
There are also two rebuttals in the comments under the publication itself. One from Littman herself pointing out the massive flaws in the study and another from some other gender studies department also tearing it apart for poor data. Even the people who agree with Turban think this is a shitty study
I saw this happen. My friends sister never once mentioned the concept of being trans, then her friend group one by one all decided they're genderspecials, and now she also aggressively enforces her "new pronouns". Guess it was just my lying eyes at it again

The methodology in this study is atrocious. Their proof for why it isn't social contagion is "People who come out as trans experience bullying (what teens don't?)" and "There are actually narrowly more boys than girls, so how can it be a social contagion amongst girls?" completely ignoring that two decades ago there were vastly more males than females with gender dysphoria.
Edit: Also it really doesn't surprise me that this is an awful study, since it's Turban, who had to admit he's in Big Pharma's pockets after initially trying to hide it. This isn't science, this is starting with a conclusion then trying to work backwards. It's the antithesis to science.
