Different generations. Boomers and gen x like yours had a more close knit and trusting communities.

Millennials and gen z males are living in the social media age, where there's no families, everyone is hyper competitive and most of us are poor af and won't make bank until our 30's. All the old institutions like gentlemen's clubs, societies, golf clubs, bars, etc are gone or reserved only for the wealthy.

We have no community and when there's no community, there's no one to trust.

Close knit and trusting? Lol no not in my life. We went outside way more, we hung around together outside, but there were fights and bickering and teasing. Maybe that's what you mean by "close knit". We were physically more social. But back then, if you were trolling people, you had to do it on the phone or in person, and if they knew who you were an ass kicking could happen.

We had massive divorce and neglect issues much of the time. Broken families didn't start with M and Z, it's been going on for decades now. I think the rise of feminism has something to do with it.

That is sad but true. Humans need communities. Including young men and teenage boys.

As a millennial man, I don't think things are so bad. Separation among men is a problem but not a huge one. But perhaps if you were raised as a woman, it would be shocking because women in particular raise their guard around men. And even though women themselves know how they treat men, it would feel more real on the receiving end. It is of course possible that the person doesn't pass and people are raising their guard because you never know what queer people are going to get offended over. Lots of possibilities.
