I asked this question too and i got some very interesting answers. If these spinters insit on being childless and spouseless, it means they're not the kind to invest into another human being. Since they don't want to invest in a human being, they're not going to invest in a way more demanding pet like a dog. Cats are the least demanding (generally) and so they end up with more and more cats.
