Even if, there's one shred of sanity and one shred of "uh, no."

The "but the bad guys know they're doing something immoral"...no. On the exact opposite- real life has shown so, so often that in reality, the villain truly believes they are the hero. No matter how evil the person is, in their heart they have no doubt they are the good guy and the ones they fight are the evildoers.

On the other side...Archie Bunker Rule does apply in many cases. If you make a character who does something reprehensible, real-life people who do that will inevitably rally behind them.

In find it so weird reading Dickens or Wilkie Collins how judgemental they are of their character. Makes the author seem like a whiny little bitch and does nothing for the story. People can work this stuff out themselves. Female writers of the same period are far less bitchy than the men.
