Yeah, it all smells pretty fishy. I think the end game of this will be in sweeping away the last vestiges of OpenAI as a not for profit, along with any potential safety limits that were in place.

The "safety limits" are not going away because those are the limitations imposed on the public. No one is going to release a full power AI to the public. The end game is clearly to remove access to AI for all the plebes. Google has been developing deep mind for a decade and you never heard of it. Not because it does not exist but because google has no interest in allowing you to use it. They could have been first to market, but they gave that up to keep the power of AI for themselves. Now they are trying to figure out how to release something to simply compete with ChatGPT while not accelerating the adoption of AI by the unwashed masses.
