I ain't handing my phone number over to some shady messaging app when I can just use Matrix. Telegram's apparently based in the UAE, which raises concerns of cooperation with Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Matrix is encrypted end-to-end, doesn't have any honeypots or intentional backdoors, and is an open standard, meaning that multiple apps for it exist, and new ones can be made. Element is the most common, and it's what I use.

I can think of a lot of reasons to not use it. Security and privacy being the main ones.
