SaidIt Survey: Proposed layout modifications. Example images of 2 default + 2 custom CSS, with/without mods. Removed voting icons to leave only voting numbers moved with source url to right side. I would assume a hover label of "Interesting" or "Fun" would pop up. (Add "Vote" for clarity?)

YouTube mostly cares about presenting videos, not views nor votes.

I'm suggesting SaidIt care more about presenting content, not votes.

People up-vote things that they don't read. It's a fact.

If this fact is true then is their vote as legitimate a measure, and if it's not should we emphasize an illegitimate measure, or is it okay to shift it to the right because it's not entirely illegitimate?

That makes it the default highest priority target, if we want to increase viewership.

How? That's a mighty leap in logic there.

There's also the presumption that "we want to increase viewership".

What does "viewership" mean to you? Does quality count? Quality of people, quality of content, quality of votes?

And when the swarms of masses come, will the problems solve themselves or go away? I suspect they'll get exponentially worse.

The voting popularity contest is a dilemma. I've posted stuff for kicks to see what they might accrue out of curiosity. Mostly I just don't give a fuck, except when I think I've posted a gold nugget that gets overlooked.

If there was an option to get rid of the votes altogether and put a limit on say 5 quality posts a day or the current setup - I'd go with the current setup. But I honestly think my slight modification is a step in a better direction, if only ever so small.

Voting is the top, because it's the essence of the format.

Get rid of voting, and everything else is moot. It would be a random article site.

If articles were eliminate; text posts could be commented on, and voted on. And vice versa.

Voting is the primary function.

It cannot be eliminated or reduced, as it's the primary method of participation.

So if most people on SaidIt started posting things about puppies, their nail polish, diaries, home renovations, car accessories, etc you wouldn't care as long as you got to vote on them? Scrap the posts altogether. Let's just vote on who we like the best.

Content is the essence and focus of the format. SaidIt already is a VERY random site.

Voting is just another way to manage the content. Lose the voting and...? You still have alphabetical and timestamp sorting (and not particularly well implemented). Voting is hardly organized. I want LOTS and LOTS and LOTS more organization and have been pleading for cross-sub classifications, metatags, public flags, personal flags, etc etc etc. Not to mention much improve search engine to ALSO search comments and wikis. And of course better navigation beyond just "prev" and "next" which suck if you want to find something from 3 months ago. Also the wiki could be much better, but that's a whole other diversion.

The default opensource Reddit fork is good, but it could be great. Honestly, coming from not having delved into Reddit at all to finally learn about SaidIt and actually start using Reddit a dozen times I am utterly astounded how primitive it all is. (Of course, I'm also not thrilled about the simpleton's YouTube layout or even worse layouts at all the other tubes, among other sites. If you want a nice forum check out https://qxr.pw/ - not the best but very good.)

SaidIt is already great, not from the fork, not from the voting - but from the content, noble community, and quality administration.

You can vote with words too. You don't need a button. But there's nothing to vote or comment on without the content, links, articles, images, texts, videos, etc.

Even if you got to SurveyMonkey and MyVote - they're meaningless votes without the content.

I never suggested elimination. I don't know what you mean by "reduced". If anything I made the numbers larger.

The primary method of participation is reading the content - then deciding to vote or comment on it as you see fit. I'm quite sure folks chose to abstain from voting too. I do. Often. Despite feeling compelled to agree with the headline and title, I won't vote unless I've read or seen it. That's not a primary action.
