He wasn't a great guy, but was surely doing something folks don't like to try and understand. He did more than just losing. At the end, he was in shambles and had given up all hope. I don't trust everything they say about what he did, but it is clear he lost heart and started making mistakes. He did more wrongs than you are letting on, even if you admire the fuck out of him. I mean, those early days are historically significant in so many ways, and those writings and conversations will be continued for generations to come, regardless of any wrongs he did or did not do.

I also think this is the big canary in the coal mine.. Edit: if we can make subs about Colonial America we should be able to make subs about Nazi Germany.
