We used to have /all as the main page for this reason. Just in the last few months we changed it to be more like reddit and have the frontpage as your subscription page. This is now also a setting that can be changed on your user preferences page.
So I think we mostly avoided the over-dilution problem, but it's possible we still suffer from it a bit. But I think people are happier having the front page be their subscribed subs by default, as that's what most people are used to. We used to get tons of people asking it to be changed, and since changing it no one has asked for it to be changed back. So I think it was the right move.
You have to balance what generates the most content, with what creates a user experience that is predictable and easily understandable to new users.

We only changed it for new user accounts created after it, if I remember correctly. So if you had it set to have /all as your main page for that user account, then it stayed that way after we changed it. You have to go in to your user preferences to change it if you have an old account.
