I don't think they are blaming men for poor pain treatment.

Rather I think it explains some weird findings like that study where people had to choose between siting in silence and shocking themselves and that one guy shocked himself hundreds of times. He might not have been trying to avoid the silence, he might have been testing how hard he was.
