An eco chamber is all they want. The karma system on Reddit is designed to stifle speech and debate of opposing views in my opinion. You can create an eco chamber of the same opinions and then create the groupthink mindset of upvote everything I like and downvote everything I don’t thus hiding uncomfortable comments from view because of mass downvoting. Terrible design choice by Reddit but also deliberate.

I always found that only the large subs suck and the smaller ones work very well, as long as theyre not moderated to death. For example I was subbed to /r/climateskeptics and had plenty of great discussions over the years.
But then all the social media giants committed seppuku to fight Trump's re-election.
