I don't think I appreciated this movie enough when it came out.

It seems more and more prescient as the years go by...

I love this movie dude. I know I'll never get tired of it. It actually feels therapeutic watching it lmao; most movies treat you like you're an idiot and bombard you with so much propaganda and symbolism while this is exposing it all. Not only is it doing that, it contains a story about a topic you can't talk to most people about irl (even family) without even getting labeled as "crazy", which is kinda socially alienating and mentally exhausting, having to wear a mask.

It's a relief to know for sure there are others who know about this stuff too despite living in ivory towers of sorts (who apparently want you to know too, and not for nefarious reasons or to rub things in your face, but to inform you). If you're ever feeling frustrated, socially isolated for your ideals or invalidated for the way you think and the information you've seen, you can literally always throw this flick on and remember it isn't just you lol. People actually worked & put 3 million USD into this project (keep in mind, this was 1988, that's around 6,559,881.66 in 2020's economy).

Their two main characters were Roddy Piper & Keith David! I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when the cameras weren't rolling and they were discussing the script. And ironically, the director was notorious for producing flops, yet this movie was created on a low budget of 3 million USD and returned 13 million, or a budget of 6 million USD and a return of 30 million in today's economy. It's probably his top 3 films, money-wise. For a low budget, underground sci-fi film with a director most didn't come to appreciate until nostalgia set in, he did something right with the movie that clicked with people. And yeah, it is a movie-book adaptation, but those can go horribly wrong and someone who usually does a bad job at directing their own movies did a great job directing this.

There's no denying certain elements of the movie are scrambled, but you can tell there are certain things that the director put a crazy amount of thought into as well. Seriously, will never tire of this movie.
