I've been following the Reddit meltdown since the API changes were originally announced, and seeing where people are going. It's taken me several weeks of reading, but I think I finally wrapped my head around the "fediverse". For anyone who is much more familiar with it all - is there a big one that isn't defederating from others (or blocking new communities) because of "safe space" mentality?

For example, Lemmy.world seems to be the largest so far and has lots of maintained communities and other instances it links with. But it has also blocked a few instances that lean more on the "free speech" side of things. And Lemmy's code of conduct says:

We are committed to providing a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for all, regardless of level of experience, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, personal appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, or other similar characteristic.
In particular, we don’t tolerate behavior that excludes people in socially marginalized groups.

I was thinking I might be able to do some recruiting by finding our people out there in the wild, but it sounds like language is going to be censored, just like on Reddit. I might be able to fly under the radar since I am only one user, but really, I should probably join one of the more "free speech" instances. But if they're blocked by larger user-centric instances, then I would be shouting in the wind.

Thoughts?

From what I've seen with federated services in general, most servers fall into one of two camps. Either they're pretty well moderated and will block servers that host content that they have a problem with, or they're a "free speech" server that is filled with edgelords posting hateful content with no merit whatsoever. I think you're right that posting in the "but my free speech" servers would be a waste of breath. Plus the optics of associating with these people would be less than favorable.

In theory, there could be a server that focuses on good-faith discussion of controversial topics, but I don't know of any. That would be a good place for "recruitment." Such a place might not get blocked for as many servers, either.

spinster.xyz is in the fediverse and yes, also blocked by the delicate flowers who don't like reality. I have not spent enough time there to give you a good rundown of the atmosphere, so it'd probably be best to just hang out there and observe. I am not aware of better options, but that might be because I haven't looked lately.

I am also not sure I could say how LGB-friendly it is but I don't recall seeing significant homophobia. But again, not a regular visitor.
