To convert hydrogen back to electricity you need some metal that does not breakdown from electricity.

That is usually an expensive noble metal, like palladium or platinum.

Any guess as to how much platinum is in every single catalytic converter attached to every single new car made in the world?

Toyota and Hyundai are way ahead of this. A search of relevant keywords will be very informative RE: Platinum and Hydrogen Fuel Cells.
