If you're not a scumbag or freak, and you avoid those who are, you'll probably never encounter a problem like this.

The thing is when I knew goths and other alternative types as a teen they were usually far nicer, calmer and harmless seeming than the normies.

Of course after watching a hundred episodes of My 600lb Life I now know that's just another tactic addicts and misfits use to hide their behaviour and keep their enablers sweet but it's taken me until middle age and a lockdown to workout that info.
