An important book which describes how European culture influenced Christianity which in turn lead to a strengthened Europe. It is briefly discussed as part of a longer essay on the influence of Christianity on Western society here.

Russell shows that the seamlessness [of Christianity and European culture] resulted from the missionaries’ policy of accommodating the Church to local custom. The result was the reciprocal Germanization of Christianity, though the process is better described as the Europeanization of Christianity because the Celtic peoples of the British Isles and the Slavic peoples of Eastern Europe also had their folk festivals incorporated into the Church. Irish monks were instrumental in converting the Germans, working from the Lake Constance area northwards from the fifth century, while Greek monks began the conversion of the Russians.
