Imagine a rich man does an experiment to test if people really approve of slavery in its best possible form. He honestly does whatever he says he will. He offers people the opportunity to live mostly like a rich person for the rest of their life but they can never own property again and must work 1 hour per day 4 days per week picking cotton by hand, except when sick or on their 10 weeks per year of vacation, for the rest of their life. They get all-you-can-eat of the worlds best food, the best doctors, the best gaming and video watching equipment, use of master's private jets, the use of 1 of masters mansions per slave, can invite friends over who can also enjoy these things, a team of people to build websites for them, almost whatever they want. but they can never get out of the deal. They are permanent slaves. Also, if any of them have kids, the kids are born into such a luxurious life of slavery. Since the master, and the masters before him, have demonstrated for a long time this is not a trick, the potential slaves and their born-into-it kids all believe they will have the good life until they die of old age. But since master owns everything, on rare occasion he takes it away and gives it back soon, like if he thinks other slaves deserve his private jets more than you this month you dont get them. You dont own anything but usually have each thing available.
Many people would prefer such a life of luxurious slavery to their life centered around 9-5 jobs. They care more about quality of life than the technicality that they are a slave since they have to work 4 hours per week on 4 different days (except when on 10 week per year vacation or sick). They practically have to work more than that anyways. They'll enjoy life more.
Imagine a free market forms of such rich people doing such experiments, so the luxurious benefits are less each next generation, since people are willing to opt in to becoming a permanent slave for less. Eventually so few people are not slaves that the ability to not be a slave fades away, is not a way of organizing things supported by society. The free market of which kind of slave you want to be is all thats left.
Debt slavery, being born into laws you cant change, the conspiracy to make nearly everyone sell 40 of their hours per week if they want to or not, owing to the national debt as soon as you're born, taxation without representation, illegal immigrants who are banned from normal work so make less money, inability to create new kinds of products and services due to overregulation, prisoners picking up trash on the side of the road for less than minimum wage, corporate takeovers of internet infrastructure and politics, etc... Theres a variety of kinds of slavery in the world today. People let it happen cuz they arent really against slavery as much as they're against low quality of life.
I so much agree, with the last paragraph especially, so so much.
