It’s not a dumb idea to bomb up bridges if your country is being invaded. It does make it harder for the enemy to get to your village. But it has to be done right.

Ukraine could have surrendered instead of destroying their own infrastructure. All those people could still be alive if the Ukraine government had surrendered to the demands of Russia when they were still in negotiations. But the rich and powerful do not want peace. They grab more power and wealth when they convince people to war against each other.

When the US invaded Iraq, did they take everything? Is that how war works?
Usually the victor chooses a new government for the land and the peasants that surrendered without fighting keep their homes, as long as they submit to the new government and pay their taxes. Those that resist the new government are rounded up.
