Let me try to explain myself better, because I agree with what you are saying.

This isn't healthy, and can make you fucking depressed.

Ultimately I can't control human civilization as a whole, just like I can't control the height of a mountain. I wouldn't identify the mountain with any type of internal 'we', even if I live on the mountain and have a stake in it. Civilization is external in the same way, but it isn't even a real 'thing', it is just a concept. Taking on the psychological burden for all of humanity is too much, and it is ultimately a choice. For me a change in the way I related myself to society was helpful in relieving this burden. Yes I care about the state of the society I live in, and my choices matter - but my choices are all that I can control and be responsible for.

I am merely relating to OP what was helpful to me in achieving a healthier outlook for my own life, as I know this can be a difficult thing to struggle with.
