Per user suggestion, until traffic on this sub picks up a bit, I'm going to create a single thread that may correlate to several weeks' worth of threads in the subreddit. We have this option because saidit's automoderator doesn't appear to have the "auto-post new threads" feature. There is no cutoff that will generate a new OT/LE thread, but speaking practically, it will probably be somewhere in the 2-3 weeks/100 comments range. We have flexibility at the expense of a small amount of convenience.

That said, here is the cross-link to the current OT/LE on reddit: https://old.reddit.com/r/CultureWarRoundup/comments/1bhitr8/march_18_2024_weekly_offtopic_and_loweffort_cw/

Welcome Back to TiA by Hatman in TumblrInAction

[–]rwkasten 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

ohai, welcome. We've had a lifeboat set up over here for Culture War Roundup for a while, and a few dedicated posters tend to cross-post content between here and reddit regularly, which I appreciate. Yes, the almost-pure reddit compatibility makes things easy to set up and roll with, but there are a couple of drawbacks.

1) Admins (admin?) are a lot more hands-off here, but there are some bright lines you cannot cross. I'm fuzzy on the details now, but there was a big blow-up about a year ago that left some free-speech-100%-absolutists with a bad taste in their mouths. Not that I think this will cause problems with most posters here, just something to be aware of.

2) This place is subject to outages. Generally only lasting hours (days at most), but I've seen it go down at least 3 times in the past year, and I don't check daily. I haven't heard any good explanations as to why, but I'm assuming its not large enough to attract the paid-for DDoS bot armies that bigger shitlord sites do. Might have to do with hosting costs.

Both of these tell me that keeping more than one exit option available is probably for the best - don't regret that decision.

Other than that, this is a decent enough reddit replacement. Let's just hope it lasts.

Meta: I want to single out /u/carn0ld03 for doing the things some of us can't or won't do. Namely: they're posting top-level comments in the sub instead of just link-dumping in the main thread. I've talked about this tendency to stick to the OT/LEs as a sort of Stockholm Syndrome before, and I am grateful that this sub looks a little more like I envisioned than the one on !saidit does.

That said, I'm kind of ambivalent about links to podcasts or videos - it's not that I don't think they belong, but that they're harder for people to quote and excerpt than pure text is. I'd almost suggest that those are fodder for the OT/LEs, except the front page looks so nice with all that extra content there. So I'm not going to make a hard and fast rule here - the posts follow the existing rules and contain external links + context, which I am convinced is the secret sauce for creating more balanced discussions without as much outgroup-bashing. NB: Not no outgroup-bashing, but a reduced amount than is seen in the "showerthoughts on how outgroup bad" format some other discussion forums have adapted.

So thank you /u/carn0ld03 for taking us at our word. A front page that's not just a list of OT/LEs is indeed far more attractive than one that is.

Here instead of there:

The quiz was a requirement for a course called U.S. Elections, which, according to the school's website, is offered "during presidential election years." The course examines "the presidential and congressional elections, the recruitment of candidates, nomination processes, financing campaigns, media coverage, polling, predictive models, and implications of results."

So nothing about the actual laws around electing officials? No 2-week whirl through the civics or even a brief note on the difference between a democracy and a republic?

You get what you deserve.

But Mother Jones doesn't run ads; they get by on subscription dollars. So how the hell is FB censorship costing them anything? Projected subscriptions lost due to non-exposure?

This smacks of another old media outlet circling the drain and desperately trying to lay blame while it's still around to do so. I look forward to them going 900% woke over the next six months and then folding.

I'm actually willing to grant that better care may be rendered (or accepted) if the patient and doctor are of similar background. This seems like one of the stronger progressive arguments out there. Of course all the remedies proposed rely on Blank Slatism and Whig History so they're automatically junk, but the premise seems right.

on Instagram in a way that makes these students feel pressured to respond due to his status

Here's one tell. Through the lens of "hopelessly addicted to status attained via narcissism-enabling social media apps", these students are absolutely correct. That someone could just not be so hopelessly addicted is a foreign concept. These are the bastard children of Jack and the Zucc.

who wish to enter progressive politics themselves

And there's the other one. Of course every progressive is very, very interested in politics; to be seen not to be means you're a bad progressive. So you have a bunch of 21 year olds lecturing a 31 year old about his consent conduct, and in a way, they are absolutely correct to do so. In the mad maze that is the progressive religion, the youngsters are on the right side of the priests here.

This would not be the case if Morse was fucking townies or wasn't such a bright progressive champion himself, but he chose to pursue sex in a snakepit he helped create and enable, and I think it just that the snakepit is now rejecting him.

And Taibbi is once again trying to destroy the progressive house with liberal tools, like this has ever worked once in the past decade. Maybe someone should inject his next red pill with a drop of black.

Outsports is on SBN, no? Those blogs are independently operated by separate (groups of) people who are not direct Vox Media employees. They do share some of the ad revenue generated by their blogs, but Vox exerts little editorial influence over their content aside from a general "don't get us sued" terms of service agreement.

The typical blogmeister on SBN will be generically big-city liberal, but that's more due to the fact that the teams they're covering are based in the same big city they are based in. That said, the vast majority of the content on the biggest SBN blogs is produced by the users, and most of them have the same "no politics unless it relates directly to the team, keep the religion to a minimum, don't be a dick" content policy as was common a decade ago. Outsports is decidedly an outlier in that regard, and last I checked, it was one of the least popular SBN blogs because of that. Turns out most sports fans are more interested in what's happening with their teams and much less interested in whatever bullshit the LGBTQ+ people want to yell about today.

It's funny because I'm pretty sure the Internet at large has bubbled itself off enough by now that there's practically no chance for toxoplasma to truly spread here. You're either in the "cops killed an innocent black man who was begging for mercy" camp or "Floyd was obviously high as balls and probably already dead by the time the cops got to him" camp, and I can't think of a major platform where both sides would simultaneously show up in enough numbers to feed the cycle.

Possible scissor statement construction: Given George Floyd's obviously disturbed state, had the first responders been EMTs instead of police, he may have been more forthright about his condition and would therefore still be alive today.

Per user suggestion, until traffic on this sub picks up a bit, I'm going to create a single thread that may correlate to several weeks' worth of threads in the subreddit. We have this option because saidit's automoderator doesn't appear to have the "auto-post new threads" feature. There is no cutoff that will generate a new OT/LE thread, but practically-speaking, it will probably be somewhere in the 2-3 weeks/100 comments range to start. We have flexibility at the expense of a small amount of convenience.

That said, here is the cross-link to the current OT/LE on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/CultureWarRoundup/comments/ib82p2/offtopic_and_loweffort_cw_thread_for_the_week_of/

Overall, I found this piece to be weaker than his last 2 or 3. It includes several common "redpilled lefty" maneuvers where their previous reactions to "crazy" right-wing stories is not also combined with any "huh - maybe my boss back then was a crazy left-wing whack-job?" reflection.

Taibbi is a bright sort, and he may be able to figure it out on his own. But I sincerely doubt he'll own up to it if he does. He'll take the Singal route of "well of course the other side has no valid points either. Guess I'm a man without a country now! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"

90s tits-and-beer liberalism isn't coming back, Matt. Get used to it.

(Actually, it's freaky how much info you can dig up on someone with some minor and very quick searching)

That's an artifact of today's "build your personal brand online or die broke and alone" Internet culture. If you're not able to do a quick Google and see that someone is on-side, then their current words are suspicious at best.

On a more local note, I know what Elgin demographics look like, and "large black underclass" doesn't figure in. I wonder if Dr. Hicks-Jones will be able to pivot that DIE cannon away from the actual large Hispanic underclass before it fires.

NB: Not all Elgin underclass are Hispanic and not all Elgin Hispanics are underclass. It's just that there's way more Elgin Hispanic underclass than Elgin Black underclass.

They're not advertising it if they do, but they are advertising an Android app. If you're a dev, you could probably easily port an open-source reddit iOS app over, if such a beast exists. Like the refactor is just s/reddit.com\/r/saidit.com\/s/g
