Terribly difficult to break the conditioning of generations of manipulation
and the worship of shallow materialism, Big McMansions and shiny SUV trucks!

Yes imo the true heart of the problem is our cultural obsession with consumerism, which is fed by advertising, which is driven by profits, which is driven by greed. It always seems to come back to the fact the most greedy are among the most powerful and venerated in American culture... everyone is a "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" just waiting their turn to win the metaphorical lottery, so they think that possibility justifies the status quo
