The only thing that triggered me is the de facto assumption that I must be doing it to save face for my group due to my ingroup bias. I was sticking up for myself and my own beliefs, not for the beliefs of any group.

Fair enough, but it wasn't about you or Muslim creed in general. It was about these individuals purportedly saying 'death to America/Israel' which is plainly abhorrent. But the way you attempted to vociferously defend them by claiming variously they were mistranslation/'malicious translation' whatever that means, made it personal, isn't it?
