The term "bleeding heart liberal" was coined in 1933, by far-right journalist Westbrook Pegler, in a column protesting federal anti-lynching laws. He was ultimately expelled from the John Birch Society because of his extreme views.

Now THAT is "far right" to me. Today, simply saying "I think we should vet people at our borders more carefully" gets you called "far right."
