...says the US gov't "think tank" charged with providing press smokescreens for whatever expansionism the US wants NATO to do for them.

A think tank has its policy position. That's how they get donors.
But compared to going toe to toe with Russia in Syria, where the costs were high ... and we lost ... Supporting Ukraine is decreasing instead of increasing Russian influence, and strengthening NATO.
All for less cost.
