That's only because ancient people tattooed themselves to worship the archons.

The ancients would tattoo themselves for many reasons. Hunting, war, or potentially therapeutic reasons as is thought of Otzi the iceman:

The meaning is typically understood as such, but it may have been understood differently at the time. Such markings were also a symbol of servitude at the time, this would perhaps be against the idea of serving no-one but the le God.
