Merkel is gone a while now. In her last reign, she lost a lot of influence to politicians you most likely would call libtards.

My point being, she already lost a lot of influence in our parliament some years ago.
It is quite obvious that obnoxious neoliberals leaning towards US rather than a real "German" or even "European" pov took over.
I honestly even believe, she never was on good terms with Putin. It was more diplomacy. Keeping doors open and such.
She never really protected German interests. That is why Nordstream 2 was basically dead before she even left office.
But she forced her austerity onto most southern european states. Which kind of isolated Germany in EU parliament and destroyed our good terms with France somewhat.
