      I heard it was the Fukushima nuclear disaster that caused Germany to want to phase out nuclear energy.

      Fukushima was caused by a tsunami, which they don't get in Europe. If that was her reasoning then it's still just as poor in my opinion.

      Well maintained nuclear facilities are very safe, it's probably the cleanup of the waste that is the biggest issue.

      My point being, she already lost a lot of influence in our parliament some years ago.

      It is quite obvious that obnoxious neoliberals leaning towards US rather than a real "German" or even "European" pov took over.

      I honestly even believe, she never was on good terms with Putin. It was more diplomacy. Keeping doors open and such.

      She never really protected German interests. That is why Nordstream 2 was basically dead before she even left office.

      But she forced her austerity onto most southern european states. Which kind of isolated Germany in EU parliament and destroyed our good terms with France somewhat.

              Trump didn't commit treason as far as I'm aware, and he has a knack for being right. Even decisions Trump made that seemed dumb to me at the moment, like ditching the WHO, seem prescient in retrospect.

              It's going to be a rough winter.

              Germany is a net power exporter, but those exports are about a quarter of what they generate from natural gas. And the renewables that make up about as much production as fossil fuels are predominantly solar and onshore wind. Which means that their pumped hydro storage will be strained.

              I don't get to how that wipes the biggest economy in Europe off the map though. And they are getting nowhere near 72% of their energy from Russia. It's been much closer to 0% since the shutting down of Nord Stream 1 pipeline.

              This Wikipedia article says they re-export natural gas, and sell electricity they produce to other countries, but they're heavily dependent on outside sources of coal, natural gas, and oil. "In 2021, Germany imported 63.7% of its energy."

              Right. I could have been clearer. When I said "power", I meant electricity. "Energy" includes transportation and non-electricity industrial energy. And there's not a lot of oil wells in Germany.
