I ain't a patriot, I'm a nationalist. I stand with my People, not my government.

semantics... Origin late 16th century: from French patriote, from late Latin patriota ‘fellow countryman’, from Greek patriōtēs, from patrios ‘of one's fathers’, from patris ‘fatherland’.

The two words have evolved to mean very different things. Patriotism is loyalty to your government, meanwhile Nationalism is loyalty to your Nation, your People.

Government does come from the people. Loyalty to the government is actually facism. Patriotism is loyalty to the LAND, nationalism to the NATION which includes the government. In other words, if anything nationalism has more loyalty to the government (it just has to align in values, so a nationalist government), because a nation cannot exist without some form of state ( at least so far in history).

Nation, Merriam-Webster:

NATIONALITY sense 5a

Nationality sense 5a, Merriam-Webster:

a people having a common origin, tradition, and language and capable of forming or actually constituting a nation-state

So no, a Nation is not a government, a Nation is a People.

Granted, but I guess countries that are also nations tend to have states then.

capable of forming or actually constituting a nation-state

Still I think patriot is a more general term, but of course it can be manipulated and distorted away from of its etymology or root meaning.

Also, the Qtards have tainted that word almost beyond repair. "Sit on your asses and enjoy the show, Patriots".

So please never call me a patriot.

I didn't think you were an American, dude. Are you?

I am legally American, but I certainly don't relate to modern American culture. But then I don't relate to any modern culture. I relate to America before 1920.

Alright, I wasn't sure. I usually see you late at night and didn't know if you were a night owl or from elsewhere.

I relate to America before 1933.

I don't know if they'd accept you though.

It was a joke about prohibition.

Have you no allegiance to the flag or the founding fathers? America having a bad time now, is precisely the time to be one and solve the problem.

Speaking only for myself, no. We've all been buried in lies about our nation. The commo political beliefs, the common religious beliefs, the common educational and medical systems - all tainted. I believe that I belong to an endangered people. I believe that there are forces in the world working for the destruction of my people. My people, divided and overwhelmed on so many fronts. Our founding fathrs are not the ones you cite.

Our founding fathrs are not the ones you cite.

Not sure what you mean. We may not know in full everything that happened and why, but the sentiment and spirit of the nation is founded on freedom from tyranny. The rest builds from there, freedom to speak, freedom to believe, etc. For example anyone who believes in systemic control as a solution of any kind, probably doesn't understand how and why the nation formed and therefore imho would have taken sides with the Brits in staying under the control of the monarchy. Today it's not Britain, it's the companies that deceivingly monopolized (and then changed their policies) the world's new media, an emerging tech that could not have been foreseen by the forefathers. We're in a similar battle against tyranny, and the two sides are simply freedom or 1984 dystopia which we are already in.

Well said. It's going to get worse.

I've lowered my US flag at my house and started to fly the Betsy ross flag about 6 months ago.

I cherish and remember the founding ideals. But we are a long way from there now.

Didn't colonists during the American Revolution consider the Brittish a foreign people, as in not their countrymen? Country referred more to geographic area of land than it did whatever nation technically is in power of a certain place. For example, Scottland was Scottland despite being under English rule.

Colonists had also been living there for almost 200 years and there wasn't television / internet or even steam-powered ships yet that might help fuse their cultures together. Instead they were separated by two months at sea. Britts and Colonists wouldn't have seen each other as countrymen the same way I might be with another American despite disagreeing with their politics.

The notion of being a patriot has to do with your country / countrymen as opposed to your government.
